Kalshi has James Talarico at 63¢ to take the Texas Senate seat. Ken Paxton trades at 38¢. Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball still call the race a toss-up, and Inside Elections still has it Lean Republican.

That's a 13-to-23-point gap between the money and the ratings, in a state where no Democrat has won statewide since 1994. We made the case on video on Oct. 7, when Talarico was trading at 66¢, on the day he hit his high. Here's the chart, the read, and the math on whether 63¢ is still worth a position.

This isn't a thin market either. The Texas Senate race has traded more than 23 million contracts, with about 16.6 million open across both sides. The Paxton contract alone cleared about 1.2 million in the last 24 hours. The live board, the forecaster bands and the polls sit side by side on our Texas Senate 2026 page.

What "the polls are wrong" actually means here

Read the table again. The polls don't disagree with the market about who's ahead. All four September polls have Talarico in front. Where they "get it wrong" is how they read: two of the four are inside the margin of error, and a 51–49 topline gets reported as a coin flip.

The market is reading the same polls and saying something much stronger. A string of small leads, all in the same direction, is worth more than any one poll. That's what a 63¢ price says.

The ratings are the real holdouts. Cook and Sabato are at toss-up, which is 50% on our Markets vs Pundits ladder, and Inside Elections' Lean R is 40%. A rater looking at Texas sees a 30-year statewide losing streak and waits for more. The market doesn't wait.

The market moved. The ratings didn't.

Line chart of Kalshi's Texas Senate odds from March to October 2026: James Talarico (D) rises from 40 cents after the May 26 runoff to 63 cents, Ken Paxton (R) falls to 38 cents, while Cook and Sabato stay at toss-up and Inside Elections at Lean R

Here's the path, by the daily close:

Open interest on the Talarico contract more than doubled over the same stretch, from about 2.9 million on Sept. 8 to about 6.1 million on Oct. 8. The move came with a lot of new money behind it.

The money went in. The price went the other way.

This is the part of the race the ratings can't see. A Senate Leadership Fund-affiliated PAC spent more than $7.7 million a day for Paxton over those 17 days. Trump has now made four trips to Texas in six weeks. Normally that kind of firepower moves a market toward the candidate it's spent on.

It moved this one the other way. Talarico gained 10 cents while the PAC money landed, and closed higher the day after Trump's Denton stop.

There's also no debate. Talarico has publicly pushed Paxton to debate, including an offer to hold one on Fox News. As of this writing, no debate has been set. A front-runner skips debates. A candidate trailing in every poll usually can't afford to.

Why it might not be 63¢

The trade math at 63¢

The gap between the market and the forecasters tells you where the disagreement is. It doesn't make 63¢ cheap on its own. There are two ways to look at it.

If you think the market is right, or not aggressive enough. $100 buys about 158 Talarico contracts at 63¢. They pay $158 if he wins, a $58 profit before fees. Kalshi's taker fee at this price is a little under 2¢ a contract, so you break even at a true probability of roughly 65%. Run your exact size through the Kalshi fee calculator.

Say your number is 70%. That's about 5¢ of expected value per contract after the fee. Full Kelly on that edge is (0.70 − 0.63) ÷ (1 − 0.63) ≈ 19% of bankroll, and quarter-Kelly is about 5%. Plug your own number into the Kelly calculator before you size anything.

If you think the raters are right. Then the value is on the Paxton side. A real toss-up priced at 38¢ for Paxton is a 12-cent gap, and a Lean R race at 38¢ is a bigger one. That's the position a ratings-truster should hold. You can't believe Texas is a coin flip and also call Talarico at 63¢ a bargain.

Our read leans with the market. Every September poll points the same way. The PAC money and the presidential visits haven't dented the price. And the candidate who's behind is the one avoiding a debate. But the cheap entry was 47¢ in early September. At 63¢, the real question is how far past two-in-three you think Talarico is.

Texas Senate Odds: The Polls Are Wrong About Talarico vs. Paxton — Follow the Markets — frequently asked

What are the Texas Senate odds for 2026?

As of Oct. 9, 2026, Kalshi prices Democrat James Talarico at 63¢ and Republican Ken Paxton at 38¢ to win the Texas Senate seat — about a 63% implied chance for Talarico. The contract was 47¢ on Sept. 8 and hit a high of 67¢ on Oct. 7. The live price is on our Texas Senate 2026 page, which updates every 15 minutes through Election Day.

Is the Texas Senate race a toss-up?

The forecasters say it's close: Cook Political Report (Sept. 23) and Sabato's Crystal Ball (Aug. 26) rate it a toss-up and Inside Elections (Oct. 1) rates it Lean Republican. The prediction market does not — it has Talarico as a clear favorite. That gap is one of the widest on the 2026 Senate map.

What do the Texas Senate polls say about Talarico vs. Paxton?

Every September poll we track has Talarico ahead, mostly within the margin of error: Fox News 51–49 (likely voters, Sept. 24–28), Texas Public Opinion Research 49–44 (LV, Sept. 19–22), Marist 50–44 (registered voters, Sept. 17–20) and Texas Southern University 47–46 (LV, Sept. 15–19).

When did a Democrat last win statewide in Texas?

1994. No Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas since then, which is the main reason forecasters are slow to move this seat off toss-up even with Talarico leading the polls.

How do I take a position on the Texas Senate race?

Kalshi lists the race under SENATETX-26 as two contracts — one for the Democratic party and one for the Republican party — each settling at $1 if that party's candidate is sworn in and $0 if not. The price is the market's implied probability. Your edge is the gap between that price and your own estimate, after Kalshi's taker fee.
