Arizona already showed the script ten days ago: 63 combined points with Carolina in the Hall of Fame game, a 33-30 finish on the last play. Tonight is a deeper version of it. Starters play a series or two of scripted offense, then it is backups against backups for three quarters. Both quarterback rooms are auditioning. Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew are competing for the Arizona job with rookie Carson Beck behind them, still carrying the chip from where he came off the board. Las Vegas has Kirk Cousins and Aidan O'Connell ahead of first overall pick Fernando Mendoza, and the organization wants Mendoza to look worth the pick. Same incentive in the backfields: Jeremiyah Love and Ashton Jeanty get a few carries, then Tyler Allgeier and rookie Mike Washington Jr. take the volume against depth defenses. Both units were among the league's worst last season, and the improved starters do not play long enough to matter. Fourteen points a quarter clears this number.
