As the first international break pauses the start of the Premier League season, it is a good moment to step back and see how the markets are lining up for the top of the table and the champion.
The two real contenders for the trophy have been Arsenal and Manchester City since long before the season kicked off. After five games, City sit atop the table having won all five, and Arsenal are second after winning four in a row and then falling 3-0 to Brighton in Gameweek 5. Arsenal, however, have always been on the top rung in the markets, and they now sit at around 63% to win the league.

Why Arsenal Is the Market's Pick at ~63¢
Looking just at what is happening on the field, they look shiny as always, with 8 goals for, 4 against, and 12 points on the table. As expected, they continue to dominate the ball, averaging roughly 60% possession across the first five matches. Whether or not they have it, the Gunners play Arteta's quick-passing style, which encourages creativity and rewards hard work by beating teams with speed of play and smart decisions. And while they have only about 8.5 xG (expected goals) after the first five, outside the league's top four, their distinguished defense continues to keep it tidy, leading the league with only about 4.0 xG against and three clean sheets.
It is easy to expect Arsenal to keep up the consistency, too, after placing second three seasons in a row before finally crowning themselves champions last year. They have again bolstered their squad over the summer, with the losses of Martinelli, Trossard and Jesus surely outweighed by the arrivals of Guimaraes, Konsa and Tzolis, who will only build on the rock-hard foundation Arteta has built.
Why Man City's Paradox Leaves Them Trading at Only ~20¢
Although City produce as they always do on the pitch, they have bigger problems to worry about before they can think about another race against the Gunners. That problem, of course, is the groundbreaking verdict that Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of 115 charges related to breaches of Premier League financial rules. The Premier League has confirmed the verdict and City have appealed, but no sanctions have been set. That has led to a scramble in the markets over the possibility of major penalties at some point this season. Charges on that scale could lead not just to fines but to heavy point deductions and, in the most extreme case, even expulsion from the league.
However, with appeals and long processes, penalties may only be decided well into 2027, which brings up another situation: rather than extreme sanctions being dealt out mid-season, the Premier League could put a pause on enforcement of any penalties until after this season concludes. If penalties are not enforced this year, that brings back the paradox of City still having a good chance at the title, though only trading at around 20% right now, and that could be a hidden value play in taking City to win. Should they avoid penalties, a top-four finish looks very likely, with strong contention for second place as well.
Looking past those charges, they have hit the ground running, winning five out of five, and a fast start counts for a lot with a force like Manchester City. Even more so than Arsenal, City average roughly 63% possession so far, second only to Brighton in both that and goals scored, with 13 netted. Not only do they hold the ball and control the game, they have always been able to take advantage of that and execute. That control also makes it easier to keep their own net safe. It was a very busy summer transfer window for City — some big departures, but record signings in return. With a fully loaded attack centered around Erling Haaland, it is hard to see the goals drying up.
Who Else Can Round Out the Top Four?
Alongside Arsenal and potentially Manchester City, Liverpool are the next strongest contenders to finish in the top four, and that is a good trade to make at around 67%: Liverpool have not finished a season lower than fifth a single time in the last 10 years. Although they have a new manager this season, their established consistency can be backed to continue with a retooled roster and some strong additions on both sides of the ball. They have had a solid start of their own, undefeated through the first five but with only two wins and three draws. After back-to-back 2-2 ties in the first two games, Liverpool have responded with three straight clean sheets. Although the attack has not been in full swing just yet, a conservative style from a new manager is fairly reasonable, and they can be expected to start revving things up in the coming gameweeks.
After Liverpool, Chelsea should also be trusted to make a strong run in the Premier League, trading at about 55% to make the top four. Although they fell short of expectations last year, Chelsea are known to bounce back quickly, and they are always an exciting team to follow. This summer Chelsea added key names to both their attack and defense, but the performances have yet to amount to much. So far, along with an uncharacteristic 3-0 loss to Brentford in Gameweek 5, the Blues have had two strong wins, a draw and a narrow loss to Arsenal. It has not been very tidy on defense, but that has been a focal point for the staff as they look to match the performance of their offense, which has already scored 10 goals (2.0 per game). Sitting 10th in the table with one of the league's weaker defensive records, Chelsea will need to keep growing their players' connection on the pitch, especially among a relatively new defensive mix. Before too long, it seems Chelsea should be able to take advantage of strong chemistry and big names to boost results and climb the ladder into the top four.
The Surprise: Is Brighton a Top-Four Team?
If one of these teams falls short, or if league penalties take Manchester City out of the picture, the other team to watch is actually Brighton, which would surprise any Premier League fan. They currently trade at about 28% to finish in the top four and have had a loud start to the season. Contrary to expectations, Brighton lead many key stat sheets: the most goals scored (16), the most xG, possession in the mid-60s on average, and the most shots on target per game. This team has come out of seemingly nowhere to launch itself into third place after five games, and all of a sudden has to be considered. Their explosive attack does not rely on just one player, but on the communal strength of the four highest attackers. Brighton already appear to have what teams like Chelsea are expected to grow: chemistry.
Brighton cannot begin to compare to the top teams on paper, but what matters is production, and theirs is undeniable. Trading Brighton to place in the top four could pay off, but because they have never finished higher than sixth, it will be important to watch for when to sell if they seem to run out of steam at any point.
