Kalshi Says the Price Moved and Your Order Didn't Match? Here's Why, and the Fix

When the price moves before your Kalshi order goes through, the contract you saw is gone. Switch the ticket to Limit, name your price and let the order rest. Here is how the ticket works.

Quick Answer

As of October 14, 2026, "The price moved" means the offer you saw on Kalshi was taken or pulled before your order went through, so the order didn't fill at that price. The fix is the Limit tab on the order ticket: set the most you will pay, keep the expiration on good 'til canceled, and let the order rest in the book.

Dollars and Shares buy at the best available price; Limit lets you name the price.

Fast markets, like player props near kickoff, move the most, so a limit order matters most there.

Why the price moves under you

A Kalshi contract trades on an order book. The price on the button is the best offer at the moment the page drew it, with a fixed number of contracts behind it. On a busy contract, a player prop an hour before kickoff for example, other traders take those contracts or the seller pulls the offer, and the next one up is more expensive. If your order reaches the book after that, the contract you saw isn't there at that price anymore, so the order doesn't fill at it.

That is why it happens most on:

The three order modes on Kalshi's ticket

Kalshi's order ticket (read October 14, 2026) has a dropdown with three modes:

ModeWhat it doesWhen to use it
DollarsBuys at the best available price, sized in dollarsLiquid contracts, small size
SharesBuys at the best available price, sized in contracts; shows the average price before you confirmSame, when you think in contracts
LimitYou set the price, pick an expiration, and can tick "Submit as resting order only"Fast or thin markets, or any time the price keeps moving

The fix, step by step

  1. Open the contract and switch the ticket's dropdown from Dollars or Shares to Limit.
  2. Enter the most you will pay per contract. Work it out first: a contract is worth buying only below your own probability. The EV calculator does that math, and the Kalshi fee calculator shows the fee at your price.
  3. Leave Expiration on Good 'til canceled (or pick a time that suits you).
  4. Tick "Submit as resting order only" if you want the order to wait in the book and never take the current offer.
  5. Confirm. Your order now sits in the book at your price and fills if the market reaches it.

The trade-off: a limit order may never fill if the price runs away from you. That is the cost of not chasing a moving price.

Size matters on player props

The best price on a player prop often has only a handful of contracts behind it. A large order walks past them into worse prices, and that is exactly when the "price moved" message shows up. Splitting the order, or placing a limit order for the full size, keeps you at your price.

Kalshi Says the Price Moved and Your Order Didn't Match? Here's Why, and the Fix β€” frequently asked

Why does Kalshi say the price moved and my order didn't match?

The price on the screen is the best offer at that moment. On a busy contract, other traders take that offer, or the seller pulls it, between the moment you load the ticket and the moment you confirm. When the contract you were buying is no longer there at that price, the order doesn't go through at it. It is the order book moving, not a problem with your account.

How do I stop my Kalshi order from failing when the price moves?

Switch the order ticket from Dollars or Shares to Limit, type the most you will pay per contract, and leave the expiration on good 'til canceled. A limit order rests in the book at your price and fills if the market comes to it, so a moving price no longer cancels the trade; the trade-off is that a limit order may not fill.

What is the difference between Dollars, Shares and Limit on Kalshi?

On Kalshi's order ticket (October 14, 2026), Dollars and Shares buy at the best available price, sized by money or by contracts, and show an average price before you confirm. Limit lets you set the price yourself, choose an expiration, and tick "Submit as resting order only" so the order only rests in the book and never takes the current offer.

Does a smaller order help on Kalshi?

Often. The best price on a player prop may only have a few contracts behind it. A large order reaches past that into worse prices, while a smaller one fits inside the best offer. Check the size on the order book before you confirm.

Is a Kalshi order that didn't match charged a fee?

Kalshi's fee is charged on contracts that trade, at the fill. An order that does not fill has nothing to charge on; a limit order that later fills is charged when it fills.
