Quick Answer

Coinbase prediction markets are Kalshi markets. Kalshi lists the contracts and settles them; Coinbase Financial Markets — a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA member — is the broker that puts them inside your Coinbase account. You fund with USD or USDC, contracts pay $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it doesn't, and trading runs around the clock except Thursdays 3–5 AM ET. It is open to US residents excluding Nevada, and it needs a separate application that can be declined on suitability grounds. The event tickers are identical to Kalshi's, so anything our tools price maps to both.

Coinbase Prediction Markets: How They Work

On January 27, 2026, Coinbase switched prediction markets on for US customers — politics, economics, crypto, sports, entertainment, technology and more, sitting one tab away from the balance you already keep there. The headlines treated it as Coinbase launching an exchange. It didn't. Coinbase built a front door onto Kalshi's exchange and took the broker seat in between. That distinction is the whole story, because it decides what you can trade, what it costs you, and where the price you see actually comes from.

Who Actually Does What

Three layers, three different companies' jobs. Knowing which layer you're dealing with tells you who to ask when something goes wrong:

Kalshi

The exchange

CFTC-designated contract market. Lists the contracts, holds the order book, determines outcomes and runs settlement.

Coinbase Financial Markets

The broker

A futures commission merchant registered with the CFTC and a member of the NFA. Holds your predictions account and routes your orders.

Coinbase app

The front end

Where you browse markets and fund positions from your existing USD or USDC balance.

The practical consequence: a market's resolution rules, its source of truth and its settlement timing are Kalshi's, not Coinbase's. If you want to know how a contract resolves, read the exchange's criterion — it's reproduced verbatim on the Coinbase market page.

The Tickers Give It Away

Coinbase didn't build its own market identifiers. It routes market pages on the raw Kalshi event ticker, which means any ticker you see in one place works in the other:

Example — the Fed funds ladder for the April 2027 meeting

Kalshi event ticker: KXFED-27APR

Coinbase market page: https://www.coinbase.com/predictions/event/KXFED-27APR

Same strikes, same resolution criterion, same expiry. Verified live August 11, 2026.

This is why our tooling is directly usable here. Every ticker our quant tools and MCP server emit is a Kalshi ticker, and a Kalshi ticker is a Coinbase URL. The fair value doesn't change because the front end did — it's the same contract on the same book.

Who Can Trade — and Why Nevada Can't

Prediction markets on Coinbase are open to US residents only, excluding Nevada. The Nevada State Gaming Control Board obtained a temporary restraining order against Coinbase that halted the product in the state. Nevada traders with open positions can hold them to close or sell out; Coinbase says it's working to restore access.

Eligibility follows residency, not where you happen to be — traveling abroad doesn't change your access either way.

The part most guides skip: this is a real regulated-brokerage application, not a toggle. Coinbase Financial Markets reviews your age, trading experience, occupation, income and net worth for suitability, and it can reject you. You also get three attempts per day — blow through that and you wait a full seven days before you can reapply. Get your details right the first time.

Funding, Fees and the Cost You Should Actually Check

Contracts can only be bought with USD and USDC from your Coinbase cash balance. When you open a position, the cash behind it moves into your derivatives account; when you close, it moves back. Unrealized gains sit unsettled and can't fund new contracts until they clear.

On fees, Coinbase is explicit that a per-trade fee covers both the cost of operating the market and its own broker fee, that it varies by market, and that the breakdown appears on the order confirmation screen before you commit. That is a fair disclosure — but note the shape of it. You are paying an exchange cost plus an intermediary, for a contract that exists on the exchange either way.

Why this matters more here than elsewhere

Contracts are capped at $1. A cost that would be a rounding error on a $400 equity trade is a material share of the spread when your maximum payout is a dollar. On a contract you buy at 62¢ expecting 100¢, every cent of friction is roughly 2.6% of your edge. Read the number in the preview, every time, and treat it as part of your entry price — not as a footnote.

Bottom line: if your capital already sits in USDC on Coinbase and you value one app over one basis point, the convenience is real and the regulatory wrapper is legitimate. If you want the complete market list, the deepest books, no broker layer on top, and coverage in all 50 states, go to the exchange itself. Plenty of traders keep both open — the tickers line up, so switching venues costs you nothing but a click.

How to Get Approved, Step by Step

  1. 1Have a Coinbase account — the predictions account is opened from inside an existing, verified Coinbase.com account.
  2. 2Check your profile — your account needs a US address and an SSN or TIN on file. Nevada residents are not currently eligible.
  3. 3Open Predictions and choose Get started — this begins the Coinbase Financial Markets application, on web or in the mobile app.
  4. 4Confirm personal and employment information — required under the trading regulations CFM operates beneath.
  5. 5Complete the financial background and identity check — age, experience, occupation, income and net worth are reviewed for suitability.
  6. 6Agree to the disclosures — read the linked disclosures and elections, then submit. Cap yourself at three attempts a day.
  7. 7Fund and trade — USD or USDC moves from your main balance into the derivatives account when you open a position.

On our referral link, plainly: the link below is our Coinbase refer-a-friend link, and it pays us if you sign up through it. Coinbase's current invitee offer is $20 in Bitcoin for buying $15 of any crypto, credited roughly 36 hours after your first trade. Read that condition carefully — the qualifying action is a crypto purchase. A prediction-markets contract is not a crypto purchase, so if you sign up and only trade predictions, you should not expect the invitee bonus to land. New customers only, and Washington residents are excluded from the offer. We'd rather tell you that up front than have you find out in 36 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Coinbase prediction markets the same as Kalshi?

The contracts are. Kalshi is the CFTC-designated exchange listing the contracts and running settlement; Coinbase Financial Markets is the registered broker that gives you access to them from inside your Coinbase account. The event tickers are identical — a Coinbase market page for KXFED-27APR shows the same strike ladder, resolution criterion and expiry as the Kalshi event of the same name. Coinbase has said it plans to add other contract providers later, but at launch everything is Kalshi.

What states are Coinbase prediction markets available in?

US residents only, excluding Nevada. The Nevada State Gaming Control Board obtained a temporary restraining order against Coinbase that halted prediction markets in the state; Coinbase says existing Nevada positions can be held to close or sold, and that it is working to restore access. Traveling outside the US does not change your access — eligibility follows residency, not location.

Do I need a separate account to trade prediction markets on Coinbase?

Yes. You apply for a Coinbase Financial Markets predictions account from inside your existing Coinbase account. Because CFM is regulated by the CFTC and the NFA, the application collects your SSN or TIN, confirms a US address and photo ID, and asks for employment and financial details. Age, trading experience, occupation, income and net worth are reviewed for suitability, and applications can be rejected. You get three attempts per day; exceed that and you wait seven days before reapplying.

How do you fund Coinbase prediction markets?

With USD or USDC cash from your main Coinbase account — those are the only eligible funds. Cash backing an open position moves into your derivatives account and returns to your main balance when the position closes. Unrealized gains cannot be used to buy new contracts because they are unsettled.

What are the fees on Coinbase prediction markets?

Coinbase applies a fee per trade that covers market operating costs plus its broker fee. The amount varies by market and is shown in the fee breakdown on the order confirmation screen before you place the order. Because Coinbase is a broker sitting on top of the exchange, this is a layer of cost that trading the same contract directly on the exchange does not have — check the number in the preview before you size a position.

When can you trade prediction markets on Coinbase?

Around the clock, except for a weekly maintenance window on Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 AM ET. Trading can also pause for scheduled maintenance, specific market conditions, holidays, or regulatory reasons.

How do Coinbase prediction market contracts settle?

Each contract settles at $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it does not. Your profit is the payout minus what you paid, minus fees. Settlement transfers can be delayed on US bank holidays, weekends, outside banking hours, or while an independent third party confirms the result.

Should I use Coinbase or Kalshi directly?

If your money already lives in USDC on Coinbase and you want one app, Coinbase is genuinely convenient. If you want the full market list, the deepest order books, and no broker fee layered on top, go to the exchange directly — Coinbase surfaces a subset of what Kalshi lists, and Kalshi serves all 50 states while Coinbase excludes Nevada. Our tools price Kalshi tickers, and those tickers work on either surface.
