*By The 7 Oracles, The 7 Oracles — The 7 Oracles at PredictionMarketsPicks*

Kalshi has Democrat James Talarico at 63¢ to win the Texas Senate seat, up from 47¢ on Sept. 8. Cook and Sabato still call Talarico vs. Paxton a toss-up and Inside Elections says Lean R. Here's the price chart, why $131 million in GOP money didn't move it, and the math on 63¢.

Kalshi has **James Talarico at 63¢** to take the Texas Senate seat. **Ken Paxton trades at 38¢.** Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball still call the race a **toss-up**, and Inside Elections still has it **Lean Republican**.

That's a 13-to-23-point gap between the money and the ratings, in a state where no Democrat has won statewide since 1994. We made the case on video on Oct. 7, when Talarico was trading at 66¢, on the day he hit his high. Here's the chart, the read, and the math on whether 63¢ is still worth a position.

## The gap in one table

| Source | Texas Senate read | As of |
|---|---|---|
| **Kalshi (SENATETX-26)** | **Talarico (D) 63¢ · Paxton (R) 38¢** | Oct. 9, 2026 |
| Cook Political Report | Toss-up | Sept. 23, 2026 |
| Sabato's Crystal Ball | Toss-up | Aug. 26, 2026 |
| Inside Elections | Lean R | Oct. 1, 2026 |
| Fox News poll (likely voters) | Talarico 51, Paxton 49 | Sept. 24–28, 2026 |
| Texas Public Opinion Research (LV) | Talarico 49, Paxton 44 | Sept. 19–22, 2026 |
| Marist (registered voters) | Talarico 50, Paxton 44 | Sept. 17–20, 2026 |
| Texas Southern University (LV) | Talarico 47, Paxton 46 | Sept. 15–19, 2026 |

This isn't a thin market either. The Texas Senate race has traded more than 23 million contracts, with about 16.6 million open across both sides. The Paxton contract alone cleared about 1.2 million in the last 24 hours. The live board, the forecaster bands and the polls sit side by side on our [Texas Senate 2026 page](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/midterms-2026/texas-senate).

## What "the polls are wrong" actually means here

Read the table again. The polls don't disagree with the market about who's ahead. All four September polls have Talarico in front. Where they "get it wrong" is how they read: two of the four are inside the margin of error, and a 51–49 topline gets reported as a coin flip.

The market is reading the same polls and saying something much stronger. A string of small leads, all in the same direction, is worth more than any one poll. That's what a 63¢ price says.

The ratings are the real holdouts. Cook and Sabato are at toss-up, which is 50% on our [Markets vs Pundits](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/midterms-2026/markets-vs-pundits) ladder, and Inside Elections' Lean R is 40%. A rater looking at Texas sees a 30-year statewide losing streak and waits for more. The market doesn't wait.

## The market moved. The ratings didn't.

Here's the path, by the daily close:

- **May 26:** Paxton beats Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican runoff. The next day Talarico trades at **40¢**, the low of the general-election race.
- **Mid-July:** Low 40s. That's where [Dane Martinez's July read](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/articles/dane-texas-senate-paxton-talarico-kalshi-july-2026) found it, with Paxton the favorite around 58¢.
- **Aug. 8:** Talarico crosses **50¢** for the first time.
- **Sept. 8:** Back down to **47¢**. This is the last dip.
- **Sept. 14–30:** A GOP PAC spends more than **$131 million** for Paxton and against Talarico in 17 days, according to [Axios](https://www.axios.com/2026/10/01/texas-senate-paxton-funding-talarico). Talarico goes from **51.5¢ to 61.5¢**.
- **Oct. 1:** President Trump campaigns for Paxton at the Peterbilt truck plant in [Denton](https://political.org/2026/10/01/trump-campaigns-for-ken-paxton-in-texas-senate-race-pushes-tariffs/). Talarico closes at **63.5¢**.
- **Oct. 7:** High of **67¢**, the day Trump headed to San Antonio for another Paxton event.
- **Oct. 9:** **63¢**.

Open interest on the Talarico contract more than doubled over the same stretch, from about 2.9 million on Sept. 8 to about 6.1 million on Oct. 8. The move came with a lot of new money behind it.

## The money went in. The price went the other way.

This is the part of the race the ratings can't see. A Senate Leadership Fund-affiliated PAC spent more than $7.7 million a day for Paxton over those 17 days. Trump has now made four trips to Texas in six weeks. Normally that kind of firepower moves a market toward the candidate it's spent on.

It moved this one the other way. Talarico gained 10 cents while the PAC money landed, and closed higher the day after Trump's Denton stop.

There's also no debate. Talarico has publicly pushed Paxton to debate, including an offer to hold one [on Fox News](https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/talarico-offers-paxton-a-home-turf-debate-on-fox-news). As of this writing, no debate has been set. A front-runner skips debates. A candidate trailing in every poll usually can't afford to.

## Why it might not be 63¢

- **Texas hasn't elected a Democrat statewide since 1994.** That's the whole reason the ratings are where they are. Base rates exist for a reason.
- **The polling leads are small.** Fox's 51–49 and TSU's 47–46 are inside the margin of error. A two-point polling miss toward Republicans is enough to erase them, and Texas has a history of exactly that kind of miss.
- **Down-ballot races are where the markets have been weakest.** In 2024 the markets [beat the pundits at the top of the ticket and lost to them down ballot](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/articles/prediction-markets-vs-pundits-2026). A midterm Senate race is down ballot. Texas is part of our [pre-registered 2026 scorecard](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/articles/prediction-markets-2024-accuracy-state-by-state), graded on the 11 p.m. ET price on Nov. 2, with the rule fixed before the result.
- **The money keeps coming.** Early voting starts Oct. 19. A late spending surge that the market has ignored so far isn't guaranteed to stay ignored.

## The trade math at 63¢

The gap between the market and the forecasters tells you where the disagreement is. It doesn't make 63¢ cheap on its own. There are two ways to look at it.

**If you think the market is right, or not aggressive enough.** $100 buys about 158 Talarico contracts at 63¢. They pay $158 if he wins, a $58 profit before fees. Kalshi's taker fee at this price is a little under 2¢ a contract, so you break even at a true probability of roughly 65%. Run your exact size through the [Kalshi fee calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kalshi-fee-calculator).

Say your number is 70%. That's about 5¢ of expected value per contract after the fee. Full Kelly on that edge is (0.70 − 0.63) ÷ (1 − 0.63) ≈ 19% of bankroll, and quarter-Kelly is about 5%. Plug your own number into the [Kelly calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kelly) before you size anything.

**If you think the raters are right.** Then the value is on the Paxton side. A real toss-up priced at 38¢ for Paxton is a 12-cent gap, and a Lean R race at 38¢ is a bigger one. That's the position a ratings-truster should hold. You can't believe Texas is a coin flip and also call Talarico at 63¢ a bargain.

Our read leans with the market. Every September poll points the same way. The PAC money and the presidential visits haven't dented the price. And the candidate who's behind is the one avoiding a debate. But the cheap entry was 47¢ in early September. At 63¢, the real question is how far past two-in-three you think Talarico is.
