Kalshi's own order ticket shows a 5x Bitcoin long liquidating 8.2% below entry, not 20%. Its numbers at every leverage, the math, and how to insure a position.

Every perps explainer, Kalshi's included, uses the same shortcut: **at 2x it takes about a 50% move to liquidate you, at 5x about 20%.** It's clean, it's easy, and on Kalshi it's badly off. We didn't take anyone's word for it, including our own formula. We checked Kalshi's app.

**Key takeaway.** **Kalshi's own order ticket shows a 5x Bitcoin long liquidating about 8% below entry, not 20%.** A 10x gold long liquidates about 5% below entry, not 10%. The shortcut assumes you're liquidated when your margin hits zero. Kalshi closes you out much earlier, and the higher the leverage, the bigger the gap.

## What liquidation price does Kalshi's app show?

You don't have to place an order to see your liquidation price. On Kalshi's order ticket, pick a perp, choose Up or Down, type a cost and move the leverage slider: the line under it reads **"Liquidates at"**. On Sept. 26, 2026 we read it for a $100 Bitcoin Up position at every leverage the slider offers, with Bitcoin at $84,179:

| Leverage | The shortcut says | Kalshi liquidates at | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.1x | 91% | $9,730 | **88.4%** |
| 2x | 50% | $47,415 | **43.7%** |
| 3x | 33% | $64,212 | **23.7%** |
| 4x | 25% | $72,430 | **14.0%** |
| 5x | 20% | $77,307 | **8.2%** |
| 6x | 17% | $80,307 | **4.6%** |
| 6.8x (max) | 15% | $82,319 | **2.2%** |

*Read off Kalshi's order ticket, Sept. 26, 2026, before submitting. Bitcoin Up, $100 cost. A 10x gold Up from $4,283.90 read $4,070.10, a 5.0% drop.*

Look at the bottom half of that table. At 5x the shortcut promises 20% of room and you get 8%. At Bitcoin's maximum, a 2% move ends the trade.

## Why is the 100 ÷ leverage rule wrong on Kalshi?

The 100-divided-by-leverage rule answers one question: *how far can the price move before my margin is gone?* At 5x, a 20% drop wipes out 100% of your margin. True.

But no clearinghouse waits for zero. Kalshi liquidates when your equity falls to the **maintenance margin**, the minimum cushion a position has to keep. Everything between zero and that line is money you can't actually use. The only question is how big that slice is.

## How does Kalshi set maintenance margin?

Kalshi puts its risk parameters on its public perps API. No login needed:

1. **Max leverage at each size.** For Bitcoin on Sept. 26 it was about 6.8x long and 6.4x short on a $1,000 position, a little less on bigger ones. That number is one divided by the opening (initial) margin rate: about 14.6% of the position for a long.
2. **The initial-margin multiplier: 1.3** on every market. The initial margin is the maintenance margin multiplied by this value.
3. **The liquidation threshold: 1.** You're closed out when equity equals the maintenance requirement.

Put 1 and 2 together and the maintenance margin should be the opening margin divided by 1.3, about 11.2% of a Bitcoin long. That formula matched Kalshi's app at 2x, to within $9. **From 3x up it didn't.** At 5x it says 9.9% of room; the app says 8.2%. Kalshi doesn't publish the exact method, and no public field closes the gap. So when we estimate a liquidation price, on our pages and in our calculator, we scale the maintenance margin up by 15%. That's the smallest adjustment that puts our estimate at or before Kalshi's liquidation price for every reading above from 2x up. An estimate that's wrong should be wrong on the side of liquidating sooner.

A crypto exchange offering 50x or 100x runs maintenance of a percent or less, so the shortcut is close enough there. **Kalshi's leverage caps are low, which makes its maintenance slice big.**

## How do you calculate a Kalshi perp's liquidation price?

For an isolated long with leverage L and maintenance rate mm, liquidation happens where your margin plus your loss equals the maintenance requirement:

- **Long:** liquidation = entry × (1 − 1/L) ÷ (1 − mm)
- **Short:** liquidation = entry × (1 + 1/L) ÷ (1 + mm)

with mm = 1.15 ÷ (max leverage × 1.3) in our calibrated estimate.

Bitcoin long at 5x, mm ≈ 0.129: (1 − 0.2) ÷ (1 − 0.129) = 0.919. **Liquidation at about 91.9% of entry, an 8.1% drop**, against Kalshi's 8.2%.

## How far from liquidation is each Kalshi perp?

For the perps we couldn't read directly, here's our calibrated estimate:

| Perp | Max lev. long | Shortcut at 3x | Estimate at 3x | Shortcut at 5x | Estimate at 5x |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin long | 6.8x | 33% | **23.4%** | 20% | **8.1%** |
| Bitcoin short | 6.4x | 33% | **17.1%** | 20% | **5.4%** |
| Ethereum long | 4.9x | 33% | **18.6%** | 20% | over max |
| Solana long | 3.6x | 33% | **11.6%** | 20% | over max |
| Silver long | 8.3x | 33% | **25.4%** | 20% | **10.5%** |
| Gold long | 15.3x | 33% | **29.2%** | 20% | **15.1%** |

*PredictionMarketsPicks estimates from Kalshi's risk parameters on Sept. 25–26, 2026, calibrated against Kalshi's app, on a $1,000-margin position, before fees and funding. They lean conservative on purpose. The [perps calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kalshi-perps-calculator) runs it live for any size and side.*

Gold is the one to be careful with. It allows about 15x, and **at 15x a move of about 1% against you ends the trade.** That's a move gold can make in an hour.

## How do you avoid getting liquidated on Kalshi?

**First, read the liquidation price, not the leverage number.** Kalshi's order ticket shows it before you submit. Treat that as the real risk, and treat "5x" as marketing.

**Second, size from the stop, not the leverage.** Decide how far you're willing to be wrong, then choose leverage so your liquidation price sits comfortably past that. The [Kelly calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kelly) helps with how much of your bankroll belongs in the trade at all.

**Third, and this is the part only Kalshi can do: insure it.** Kalshi lists monthly one-touch contracts on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Dogecoin: "will Bitcoin trade below $X by the end of the month?" If your 5x long liquidates at $77,300, a YES on "below $78,000" pays $1 a contract if you get there. Its price is **the market's own odds you get wiped out.** Buy enough contracts to cover your margin and you've capped the worst case. Gold and silver have ladders too, but they settle on a closing price, not a touch, so they only pay if the price is still down there at the close.

The [perps calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kalshi-perps-calculator) finds the cheapest strike that still covers your liquidation price, prices it with Kalshi's event-contract fee, and tells you how many contracts cover your margin.

## The bottom line

Leverage on Kalshi perps is lower than offshore, and that's a feature. But lower caps come with a bigger maintenance slice, so **at 5x you get well under half the room the shortcut promises.** Read the "Liquidates at" line before you click.
