# The Last 60 Seconds of a Kalshi Bitcoin 15-Minute Market: We Tested the 12:30 Rule on Two Weeks of Tape

*By Benny Ricciardi, FSWA Award Winner · Published Author · Ran 4Deep Sports · Led FTN Marketing · Traded Bonds on Wall Street — The 7 Oracles at PredictionMarketsPicks*

A popular rule says to stop buying 80¢+ favorites after 12:30 in Kalshi's 15-minute bitcoin markets. We ran it against 1,258 windows of trades and a 5-second order book. There is no 12:30 cliff, the book does not fall apart late, and the final minute was the best stretch for favorites. The reason is the settlement rule: a 60-print average. Here is the data, the math, and the final-minute lane we now run in public.

**The short version.** - **The 12:30 rule fails on our tape.** Across **1,258 Kalshi bitcoin 15-minute windows** (Oct 13–27, 2026), 80–99¢ favorites won about what they cost at every minute. The taker fee is the drag, and it is the same before and after 12:30.
- **The book doesn't fall apart late.** Top-of-book size thins all window long, but spreads don't widen. The median spread drops from 1¢ to a tenth of a cent.
- **The final minute was the best stretch for favorites.** Takers who bought them in the last 60 seconds netted **+2.67¢ per contract** after fees, **+1.90¢** weighted by contracts.
- **Why: the settlement rule.** KXBTC15M settles on the **average of 60 one-second index prints**, so every second of the final minute fixes 1/60th of the answer. Uncertainty collapses far faster than "spot vs. strike" pricing assumes.
- **So we're running a final-minute lane in public.** Paper first, strict fills, a pre-registered pass line, and the live record below.

A post making the rounds on r/Kalshi says to stop buying 80¢+ contracts after the 12:30 mark of Kalshi's 15-minute bitcoin windows. Liquidity fades, "gamma explodes," and you risk 80 to make 20.

It sounds smart. So we ran it against our own tape: every trade in **1,258 windows**, and the order book every 5 seconds. Every number below is from that capture, re-run on October 27, 2026 at noon ET. The live board is on [Bitcoin Edge 15-Min](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/bitcoin-edge-15m).

## The data

| Source | What | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Kalshi order book, every 5 s | Bid, ask and size at the top of the book | 1,258 windows, Oct 13 → Oct 27, 2026 · 1,071 watched open to close |
| Kalshi tape, 10-s buckets | Every print, by taker side | 1,258 windows, same span |
| Calibration grid | First reading per window, side and minute, 5¢ bands | 3,212 windows since Sept. 23, 2026 |
| Kalshi settlements | Strike and Kalshi's own result | Every window graded |

In the tables below, "favorite" means the side priced 80–99¢, the band the post is about. "Net" is cents per contract after Kalshi's taker fee, the fee you pay as a taker at the fill ([what that costs at each price](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kalshi-fee-calculator)).

## Real fills: what takers actually got

This is the tape: real trades buying the 80–99¢ favorite, graded against how the window settled. Equal-weight counts one entry per window, price band and stretch. The contract-weighted column sits beside it.

![Bar chart of taker fills on Kalshi bitcoin 15-minute favorites: −0.76¢ before 12:30, +0.43¢ from 12:30 to 14:00, +2.67¢ in the final minute.](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/images/articles/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-last-60-seconds/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-final-minute-taker-fills-october-2026.svg)

| Stretch (clock) | Entries | Won | Paid | Net, equal-weight | SE | Net, contract-weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Before 12:30 | 2,563 | 90.3% | 90.4¢ | −0.76¢ | 0.56 | −0.49¢ |
| 12:30–14:00 | 1,373 | 93.7% | 92.8¢ | +0.43¢ | 0.63 | −0.31¢ |
| **Final 60 s (14:00–15:00)** | 538 | 97.1% | 94.1¢ | **+2.67¢** | 0.68 | **+1.90¢** |

The final minute, by price band:

| Band | Net per contract | SE | Entries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80–89¢ | +5.47¢ | 2.54 | 110 |
| 90–94¢ | +3.70¢ | 1.44 | 126 |
| 95–99¢ | +1.22¢ | 0.49 | 302 |

There are no prints after the close. The window really is over at 15:00.

## The book at exact clock marks: no 12:30 cliff

The tape shows what takers who chose their moment got. The book answers a blunter question: what if you bought the favorite at the ask at every clock mark, no judgment involved? Here are the 1,071 windows we watched from open to close.

![Bar chart of net cents per contract buying 80–99¢ Kalshi bitcoin 15-minute favorites at each clock mark, with no drop at 12:30.](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/images/articles/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-last-60-seconds/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-no-1230-cliff-by-clock-mark-october-2026.svg)

| Clock | Windows | Won | Ask | Net after fee | SE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5:00 | 295 | 86.4% | 87.5¢ | −1.77¢ | 1.95 |
| 10:00 | 596 | 91.9% | 92.0¢ | −0.56¢ | 1.09 |
| 12:00 | 506 | 91.9% | 92.6¢ | −1.14¢ | 1.18 |
| **12:30** | 493 | 91.7% | 93.1¢ | −1.87¢ | 1.20 |
| 13:00 | 454 | 92.1% | 93.1¢ | −1.46¢ | 1.23 |
| 13:30 | 399 | 94.0% | 93.3¢ | +0.29¢ | 1.16 |
| 14:00 | 323 | 93.5% | 93.5¢ | −0.43¢ | 1.35 |
| 14:15 | 207 | 94.7% | 94.3¢ | +0.06¢ | 1.54 |
| 14:30 | 131 | 93.9% | 94.3¢ | −0.77¢ | 2.01 |
| 14:45 | 74 | 95.9% | 95.4¢ | +0.23¢ | 2.18 |

12:30 is the lowest row, but it is within 1.6 standard errors of zero, and 13:30 is positive. Buying every favorite blind is a fee-sized drag at every mark. There's no cliff.

Our five-week calibration grid says the same thing before fees. Late in the window, here is how often each band won against what it cost:

| Clock | 80–84¢ | 85–89¢ | 90–94¢ | 95–99¢ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12:00–13:00 | 79.0% vs. 82.1¢ (n 167) | 89.4% vs. 87.1¢ (198) | 92.5% vs. 92.4¢ (361) | 97.1% vs. 97.0¢ (481) |
| 13:00–14:00 | 84.9% vs. 82.1¢ (106) | 82.4% vs. 87.3¢ (153) | 91.0% vs. 92.5¢ (299) | 97.2% vs. 97.0¢ (422) |

Every late cell is within 1.9 standard errors of fair. The 80–89¢ cells swing both ways on small samples, so don't read a pattern into them.

## Liquidity by minutes left

From the 5-second book. Size is the thinner side of the top of the book, so compare the rows with each other rather than reading them as contracts you could fill.

| Minutes left | Median spread | Average spread | Spread over 3¢ | Median thinner side | Avg 5-s spot move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | 1.0¢ | 1.01¢ | 0.1% | 3,068 | 0.72 bp |
| 10 | 1.0¢ | 0.94¢ | 0.0% | 2,753 | 0.69 bp |
| 5 | 1.0¢ | 0.70¢ | 0.1% | 1,465 | 0.63 bp |
| 3 | 1.0¢ | 0.58¢ | 0.1% | 1,074 | 0.63 bp |
| 2 (12:00–13:00) | 0.1¢ | 0.52¢ | 0.0% | 901 | 0.62 bp |
| 1 (13:00–14:00) | 0.1¢ | 0.48¢ | 0.1% | 586 | 0.59 bp |
| 0 (final minute) | 0.1¢ | 0.56¢ | 0.8% | 561 | 0.63 bp |

Depth at the top thins steadily, down 81% from minute 13 to the last full minute. The spread doesn't widen. And spot isn't jumpier late: 0.59–0.63 basis points per 5 seconds in the last three minutes against 0.69–0.76 early in the window.

## Why: the settlement average, not gamma

Here is the part the post misses. Kalshi doesn't settle a 15-minute bitcoin window on the last tick. It settles on the **simple average of 60 one-second prints** of the CF Benchmarks Bitcoin Real-Time Index in the final minute ([the full rule](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/articles/how-kalshi-settles-bitcoin)).

That changes the shape of the risk:

- **Inside the final minute**, every second that passes fixes 1/60th of the answer. With r seconds left, the remaining uncertainty scales with r to the power 1.5, not the square root. At 30 seconds left it is **71% smaller** than a last-tick settle would be.
- **Before the final minute**, the average still dampens things. At 12:30, the uncertainty is **14% smaller** than a last-tick settle.

![Line chart: a 60-print settlement average leaves far less room to move than a last-tick settle in the final minute of a Kalshi bitcoin 15-minute market.](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/images/articles/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-last-60-seconds/kalshi-bitcoin-15-minute-settlement-average-uncertainty.svg)

So a trader who prices the contract as "spot against strike, volatility times the square root of time" overstates how much can still go wrong, most of all in the last minute. That's the trader selling you the favorite too cheap. "Gamma explodes" describes a last-tick option. This contract isn't one.

## The verdict, claim by claim

| The post's claim | Our data |
|---|---|
| Theta and gamma compression make late favorites fragile | The settlement average does the opposite in the final minute: uncertainty collapses. Spot isn't jumpier late either. |
| Liquidity withdraws before the CF Benchmarks average | Half right. Top-of-book size thins all window long, but spreads don't widen, and spreads over 3¢ stay under 1% even in the final minute. We don't capture the spot exchanges' order books, which is where the post's evidence comes from. Kalshi's own book is what fills you. |
| 80¢+ after 12:30 is a punishing asymmetry | Favorites win about what they cost at every minute. The taker fee is the drag, and it's the same before and after 12:30. |
| Stand down after 12:30 | Not supported. 12:30–14:00 did no worse than earlier, and the final minute was the best stretch for favorites. |

Two caveats. First, this is 14 days of book and tape, and the 80–89¢ cells are thin. Second, the tape's final-minute edge belongs to takers who **picked their spots**. Buying every final-minute favorite blind at the same checkpoints our lane uses comes out at **+0.67¢ per contract (SE 0.78)**, which isn't significant. The money is in knowing how much of the average is already fixed.

## The final-minute lane, run in public

That's the strategy we're now testing, out loud. **This version of the strategy stays until it breaks.**

The rule, in plain English: in the final minute of a Kalshi 15-minute bitcoin window, we compute how much of the 60-print average is already fixed and what the rest can still do. When that says the market favorite is underpriced after the fee, we buy the favorite. Once per window, never the other side.

How it's graded:

- **Kalshi only**, on KXBTC15M.
- **Paper first, with strict fills.** A paper fill counts only if the next book reading, five seconds later, still offers the price, **and** a real trade printed on our side at that price. Asks in the last seconds get picked off, so we grade on the stricter of the two.
- **A pass line set before the first fill:** 300 graded fills, at least **+1.0¢ per contract** net after fees, a positive 90% lower bound, and both halves of the sample positive. At the backtest's pace, before strict fills thin it out, that takes about four weeks.
- **Live after a pass, small:** $3 maximum a position, and a $25 daily loss stop.
- **What we don't publish:** the exact entry thresholds, while the test runs. The final-minute book is thin, and the thresholds are fixed in a dated pre-registration, so they can't be tuned after the fact.

In a backtest on the same 14 days, using the public exchange basket as a stand-in for the index, the rule fired in **161 windows, won 98.1% and netted +3.81¢ per contract after fees** (SE 1.10). A backtest isn't a record. The live lane prices on the real in-flight average, and the scoreboard below is the record.

## What this means if you trade these markets

- **Don't stand down at 12:30 because of a rule.** The fee is the real drag, and it's there at every minute. Check what a fill costs at your price before you click.
- **Respect the final minute for what it is.** It isn't a coin flip on direction. It's a partly known average, and favorites there have been priced a little too cheap.
- **Size small.** A 95¢ favorite that misses costs you 95¢. Even a rule that wins 98% of the time needs a position size that survives the 2%. Our [Kelly calculator](https://predictionmarketspicks.com/tools/kelly) does the math.
